Periodontitis or gum disease is caused by bacteria in your mouth that turns into an infection. This chronic infection causes destruction to your jawbone and the tissues and bones that support your teeth. If left untreated, pockets can form between your teeth and gums, where the bacteria can then grow. When bacteria accumulate inside these pockets, your teeth can fall out. 

At Aesthetic Dentistry, one method we use to combat periodontitis is laser periodontal therapy. An alternative to surgery, this treatment utilizes a diode or soft tissue laser to achieve healthy gums.

The procedure

This laser procedure is a "no cutting-no stitching" treatment. We start by using a periodontal probe to measure the depth of any destructive pockets. Dr. Patti Swaintek-Lamb and Dr. Cheryl Tauriello will then use the laser to remove any diseased tissue and other debris found in the pocket underneath your gums. Ultrasonic scalers and special hand instruments will be used to clean and smooth the surface of your root. Any disease-causing bacteria will be killed, leaving a sterile environment.

The laser is then used a second time to aid in the clot formation, which acts like a bandage around your teeth to promote rapid healing and the formation of new gum around your teeth.
