The Dental Veneers Process

Bernardsville, Morristown and surrounding areas in New Jersey

Dental veneers can improve the appearance of one or two of your teeth or give you a complete smile makeover. Whether you are interested in improving your natural smile or changing its appearance, understanding the dental veneer process is a good way to begin.

Dental Veneer Consultation and Considerations

The first step in the dental veneers process is your consultation with one of our experienced cosmetic dentists. Because there are several different types of dental veneers, Dr. Swaintek-Lamb or Dr. Tauriello will meet with you to discuss your goals and expectations and to help you decide which dental veneers are right for you. Depending on your budget, your goals, and your oral health, we may recommend:

You will also have several other options regarding your dental veneers, including:

  • How many and which teeth to place them on
  • Size and shape
  • Color and brightness

Like many patients, you may choose to undergo tooth whitening before the color matching step in the dental veneer process, so your porcelain veneers will match your teeth when they are at their whitest. We may also recommend gum recontouring so that your smile appears more even after the dental veneers have been placed.

Preparing Your Teeth for Dental Veneers

Once your desired outcome has been decided on, the cosmetic dentist will prepare your teeth based on the type of dental veneer chosen. Lumineers® are often applied directly to the surface of your tooth enamel, with very little or no preparation. Composite resin veneers require slightly more preparation, requiring your tooth enamel to be roughed before they can be applied. Porcelain veneers require the most tooth preparation; about 1/8 inch of tooth enamel will be removed from the front and biting edge of your teeth.

When your teeth are properly prepared, an impression will be taken and sent to a lab where the dental veneers will be created. During the time that the dental veneers are being made, you will have temporary dental veneers. Many patients feel that even their temporary veneers are an improvement over their original smile, almost like a preview of the final dental veneers.

Once the permanent dental veneers are received at our office, you will come in for a second appointment and your permanent dental veneers will be affixed to your teeth with dental adhesive. The veneers will then be smoothed and polished and your dental veneer process is complete.
