Dental inlays and onlays are restorations that are used to fix rear teeth that have suffered mild to moderate decay. These restorations can also be used to repair teeth that are cracked or fractured if the damage is not severe enough that it requires a dental crown.
Made from porcelain or composite resin, inlays and onlays can be matched to the color of your natural tooth, and are often used to replace metal fillings and enhance the aesthetic appearance of your smile.
Dental inlays are designed for teeth with decay or damage within the top grooves of your tooth’s surface. Inlays are ideal for replacing silver fillings. At Aesthetic Dentistry, we use a CEREC machine that allows us to create restorations that are designed, made, and placed in one visit. This means that you generally need only one visit to have your inlay inserted.
After receiving your inlay, there you may experience a mild feeling of tenderness in the affected area. However, you should be able to return to work or resume your normal activities the minute you leave our office.
An onlay is a more extensive reconstruction than an inlay and is used to treat tooth decay that covers one or more cusps of your tooth. Onlays are recommended in situations where a significant reconstruction is necessary. However, more of the tooth structure can be preserved with an onlay, compared to a dental crown, because a minimal amount of your tooth’s surface is removed. Like inlays, onlays are also created in one visit using our state-of-the-art CEREC machine, the latest in dental computer technology.
Also like dental inlays, onlays can be created from tooth-colored material, which makes most undetectable to the naked eye. One of the most beneficial aspects of onlays is that, by preserving more of your tooth, they help avoid the eventual need for more extensive treatment with dental crowns, bridges and partials, or dental implants.
When treating tooth decay, inlays and onlays work to eliminate tooth sensitivity and subsequent tooth loss. Other benefits include:
