The causes of sleep apnea vary by individual and the type of sleep apnea from which a person suffers.
If you or a loved one suffers from chronic snoring or other symptoms of sleep apnea, New Jersey sleep dentist Dr. Patti Swaintek-Lamb can diagnose the source of your sleep disorder and recommend a treatment customized to your unique condition.
There are three forms of sleep apnea:
- Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
- Central sleep apnea
- Complex sleep apnea
- OSA is the most common type of sleep apnea, and it is caused by an airway obstruction. Generally, this airflow blockage is the result of the relaxing of muscles and the collapsing of soft tissue in the back of the throat during sleep. This blockage disrupts your airflow and results in episodes—or apneas—in which you stop breathing periodically as you sleep.
Central sleep apnea is caused by a failure of your brain to transmit the signals necessary to trigger regular breathing. Central sleep apnea is often the result of another medical condition, such as heart disease or a stroke.
Complex sleep apnea is caused by both an airway obstruction and a disruption of your regular breathing pattern.
In any form, sleep apnea is a dangerous problem that can contribute to more severe health complications. Fortunately, there are a number of treatment options available, including comfortable and effective oral appliances.
