Myofunctional Therapy and Naturally Straight Teeth

Did you know that there is an alternative to braces to create beautiful, naturally straight teeth? Although braces are effective in forcing teeth into straighter alignment, teeth will often start to become crooked again without a permanent retainer. This is because braces do not address the underlying issues that actually cause crooked teeth and incorrect facial development. So, what can we do about this?

First, some background. Modern research shows us that crowded teeth, incorrect jaw development, and other orthodontic problems are NOT caused by big teeth in small jaws or other hereditary facts. We now know that breathing pattern and proper tongue resting placement is what dictates teeth position. By focusing on helping our patients develop proper nasal breathing, we are also helping to prevent their teeth from shifting (along with helping with many other potential health problems down the road).

Our office is proud to offer The Myobrace System to our patients. Myobrace involves using a series of removable intra-oral appliances that are worn for 1-2 hours each day plus overnight while sleeping. We also use Myofunctional Therapy to teach patients proper breathing habits. Therapy consists of a program of specific exercises that target the facial muscles used to chew and swallow to strengthen the tongue.

Of course, there are still plenty of situations where we will recommend traditional braces or Invisalign to our patients. But we also supplement these treatments with Myofunctional Therapy after the braces have been removed to prevent teeth from relapsing.
