Stay on Top of Your Oral Health in 2019 by Scheduling an Appointment

Regular check-ups are the cornerstone of good dental health -- and even your overall health. Start your year off right by scheduling an appointment with Dr. Swaintek-Lamb here at Aesthetic Dentistry of Bernardsville.

When you come in for a professional teeth cleaning and dental exam every six months, it’s not just for scraping tartar and polishing your teeth, although those are important parts of dental hygiene. It’s also a preventive strategy to catch any developing issues with your teeth and gums, and take care of them before they become problematic or costly.

What takes place at your dental check-up

If you’ve kept on top of your oral health by scheduling regular cleanings, and you’ve maintained good oral hygiene during the months between dental visits, your appointment should be a breeze.

One of our skilled dental hygienists assesses your mouth and provides a thorough teeth cleaning by scraping away any plaque and tartar, polishing your teeth, and flossing between them. The hygienist answers any questions you may have about oral hygiene, and can demonstrate the proper way to brush and floss your teeth, if you’d like a reminder.

Once the basic assessment has been done, Dr. Swaintek-Lamb, examines your teeth and gums, checks your bite, looks for anything else that might be amiss, such as loose teeth, tooth decay, gum disease, or oral cancer.

X-rays may be taken to assess the condition of your teeth, including their roots, and look for any decay below the gum line.

Your mouth is a virtual crystal ball that can indicate certain diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Chronic conditions and vitamin deficiencies can also be detected with a peek inside your mouth. We’ll also check the joints of your jaw to detect anything that may indicate a problem, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.

Why dental exams are so important

As mentioned, your oral health exam includes screening for oral cancer. Almost 50,000 cases of oral cancer occur each year in  the United States. Risk factors include tobacco use of any kind, including smoking cigarettes, cigars, or pipes and chewing tobacco or snuff. Risks also increase due to heavy alcohol consumption, HPV (a sexually transmitted disease), immune deficiencies, and extreme sun exposure.

Gum disease is becoming more prevalent, too, and it’s estimated that half of American adults over 30 have some degree of gum disease. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to the loss of your teeth, and can cause infections that can endanger your overall health. By scheduling a regular check-up, you can stay on top of gum disease before it becomes a threat.

Preventive care for good oral health in 2019

Coming in every six months allows Dr. Swaintek-Lamb to tailor your oral health exam to your needs for appropriate preventive care. She’ll be able to compare your prior X-rays and exam information to observe any current changes that might require prompt attention.
