Say goodbye to constant fatigue.
Do you wake up exhausted? Does your partner complain of sleeplessness caused by your snoring? If this sounds all-too familiar, you could be one of millions of Americans who suffer from sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is a condition when a person’s breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, leaving them gasping for air. This can happen hundreds of times each night, preventing restorative and restful sleep. Because it occurs during sleep, most apnea sufferers are unaware of their condition.
There’s more at stake than sleep.
The most frequent type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), where the airway is blocked by collapsing throat tissue. When left untreated, OSA can cause other health problems, some of which are serious:
- Increased risk of stroke and cardiac problems
- High blood pressure
- Increased risk of diabetes
OSA causes the brain to chronically suffer from insufficient oxygen. That is why you feel slow-moving and forgetful during the day and may perform poorly at work. It can also cause chronic headaches and depression over time.
Should you be worried about OSA?
Over half of OSA patients are obese. Extra tissue around the throat can more easily collapse and block it during sleep. Other risk factors are:
- Aging (about one in ten people over 65 have sleep apnea)
- Family history of sleep apnea
- High blood pressure
- Gender (about 1/25 men in midlife have sleep apnea, whereas only 1/50 middle-aged women have it)
- Racial background (more likely if you are Hispanic, African-American, or from the Pacific Islands)
How can Dr. Patti help?
Aesthetic Dentistry of Bernardsville now offers sleep apnea treatment. Dr. Patti will work with your sleep physician to restore your regular breathing during sleep, thus relieving loud snoring and daytime fatigue.
The treatment most often associated with sleep apnea is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP, machine. CPAP users must wear a mask (that either covers both the nose and mouth or the nose, alone) that is attached to a small bedside machine. The problem with CPAP machines is that they limit your sleeping positions, may result in a dry nose and throat, and can simply be uncomfortable. The good news is that CPAP is not the only effective way to treat OSA.
If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, our dentist, Dr. Patti Swaintek-Lamb, can consult with your sleep physician then give you a thorough dental examination and fit you with an oral appliance. You would wear this at night to keep your airway open or use it with a CPAP machine for an effective combination therapy. Because it would be custom-made for you, it would be comfortable and convenient. No more interrupted sleep or groggy days; you’ll awake well-rested and alert.
