Bernardsville Dentist Serving Morristown, Basking Ridge, Mendham, Chester, and Far Hills, NJ
How long does dental implant surgery take?
Dental implant process often takes between four and nine months to complete. This advanced procedure is lengthy to assure a successful outcome. Please keep in mind that there are two different stages of treatment, one to secure the implant and another to fasten the restoration to the implant. You will be given temporary teeth, so you will never be without teeth during these months.
Is there a chance of rejection?
Though your body will not reject a dental implant like it could a major organ, dental implants can fail if your bone and surrounding tissue do not grow around it. Dental implants are made of titanium, which is 100 percent compatible with your body tissue, allowing it to safely join together with your surrounding bone and actually becoming a permanent fixture in your mouth.
While the failure rate is low, it can happen.
Some reasons for failure include:
- Excessive or improper force on your implant
- Gum disease
If your implant does fail, you can try again once your mouth heals. This typically takes several months.
How much pain is involved with this procedure?
As with any surgery, there are certain risks of pain and discomfort. Your dental surgeon will offer sedation dentistry options so that you can relax during the procedure while feeling and remembering little, if anything, from your treatment. The day after your surgery, you will receive a prescription for medication that can ease any postoperative discomfort.
Who is not a good candidate for dental implantation?
Certain medical factors can prevent your from being a good candidate.
Some of these include:
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Blood disorders
- Bone marrow cancer
- Chemotherapy or radiation therapy
- Poor bone quality
- Insufficient bone
- Low sinuses
- Nerve bundles
What factors play a role in the long-term success of my dental implant?
Long-term success will depend on your quality and quantity of bone. The quality of the restoration placed on top of the implant will also play a major role in long-term success of your implant.
