What is teeth whitening?
Because your natural teeth are porous, they are easily susceptible to staining. Each person’s teeth are unique and can stain at different rates, depending on their chemistry, lifestyle and diet. Different sets of teeth stain at different rates. You may drink coffee six times a week and your teeth remain a stunning shade of white, while your friend drinks red wine once a week and suffers a dark shade of yellow. There are different methods of teeth whitening, from professional bleaching techniques to at-home whitening kits. Our dental team can help you determine which method is right for you.
Why do some teeth turn yellow?
There are a number of factors that can affect the color of your teeth. One of the most important factors is your genes. If your parents have naturally yellow teeth, chances are high that your teeth will ultimately turn the same color. Additionally, what you eat and drink affects the color of your teeth. Certain foods such as berries, coffee, red wine, and colas can stain your teeth if you consume them regularly. Smoking also has a negative effect on the appearance of your teeth, as do certain antibiotics like tetracycline.
How can I whiten my teeth?
In general, there are three ways to whiten your teeth: in a dental office, with dentist issued at-home trays, and with over-the-counter whitening kits. At Aesthetic Dentistry, we use Zoom!2®, a professional, dentist-supervised procedure that produces dramatic results. We also issue at-home whitening trays that are still highly effective, but can be used in the privacy of your own home.
How white can my teeth become?
Since every person’s mouth is different, as are the nature of their discolorations, this is hard to answer. A mere two or three shades can make a notable difference in your smile. With Zoom!2®, you can see results up to six shades lighter. At Aesthetic Dentistry, every patient’s goal is to achieve their individual optimum whiteness while maintaining a natural appearance.
How long does teeth whitening last?
While it can last for several years, teeth whitening is not a permanent procedure. Typical results last months, but periodic touch-ups are often required to keep your smile dazzling. In most cases, the whitening procedure is extremely effective and our patients are highly satisfied with the results.
