When you are missing one or more teeth, choosing dental implants over a removable denture or partial is often the best option. Dental implants are a permanent solution to tooth loss, they look more natural than their temporary counterparts, and they protect your surrounding teeth from damage. If you are missing one or more teeth, your first step should be finding out if you are a good candidate for implant dentistry.
Dental Implant Candidacy in Bernardsville
Requirements for Dental Implants
Dr. Patti Swaintek-Lamb will only recommend dental implants if she is confident that you have a good likelihood for success. The outcome of implant surgery usually depends on:
- Having a sufficient amount of jaw bone that is also dense enough
- Having healthy surrounding teeth and gums (no periodontal disease)
- Having good overall health
- Being an adult
- Being a non-smoker
- Needing to replace a missing tooth or teeth
It is important for you to be in good overall health, as smoking and certain chronic illnesses make it difficult for your jawbone and gums to heal properly after dental implant surgery. However, patients with diabetes or high blood pressure are still often good candidates for implant dentistry. If you have a chronic illness, make sure Dr. Patti is aware of your condition before you begin any procedure.
You must also be an adult because children or adolescents whose jaw bones are still growing may experience difficulty if a dental implant has been placed too early in life.
Regaining Gum and Bone Health Before Implant Placement
If you are currently suffering from periodontal disease or your jaw bone is not dense enough, you may still be able to enjoy the advantages of dental implants. Undergoing treatment to reverse the effects of gum disease or having a bone graft can return your jaw bone and gum tissue to the healthy state they must be in before implant placement can be performed. Different types of implants may also be used if you do not have enough bone structure to support a traditional single-post implant.
Once we have determined that you are a good candidate for dental implants, Dr. Patti Swaintek-Lamb will place the titanium implants in your jaw bone. After your healthy bone and gum tissue has healed and made the implant stable, we will place your new dental crown, bridge, or denture in our office.
You can only find out if you are a good candidate for dental implants by meeting with an experienced implant dentist.
