If you need a deep dental cleaning, you might be feeling a little unsure about what that means. You’re not alone. The term “scaling and root planing” sounds a bit technical, but the procedure is actually very common and plays a big role in treating gum disease.
Patricia Swaintek-Lamb, DMD, and our team at Proud to Smile Dentistry in Bernardsville, New Jersey, are here to answer your questions and make you comfortable. Let’s take a closer look at what you can expect before, during, and after your deep cleaning appointment.
Scaling and root planing is a type of deep dental cleaning that goes beyond what’s done during a regular dental cleaning and check-up. It focuses on removing plaque and tartar that have built up beneath the gumline. When this buildup isn’t removed, it can lead to inflammation, bleeding gums, and even tooth loss over time.
The procedure has two main steps. The first is scaling, which removes the hardened plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth and below the gums. The second is root planing, which smooths the roots of your teeth. It helps the gums reattach and makes it harder for bacteria to collect again.
We usually recommend this treatment when there are signs of periodontal disease. These can include bleeding when brushing, persistent bad breath, swollen or tender gums, or deep pockets forming between the teeth and gums.
Before your appointment, Dr. Swaintek-Lamb examines your mouth and measures your gum pockets. These measurements help determine how far the disease has progressed. We may also take X-rays to get a more detailed look at the bones supporting your teeth.
To ensure your comfort during the procedure, Dr. Swaintek-Lamb can numb the area with a local anesthetic. You’ll be awake during the cleaning, but you shouldn’t feel any pain.
The procedure itself can take one or more visits, depending on how much work needs to be done. We may treat one half of your mouth over the course of two visits, or we may complete everything in one visit.
Once you’re numb, Dr. Swaintek-Lamb uses special instruments to carefully remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline. She then smooths the surfaces of your tooth roots to reduce future buildup and promote gum healing. She may apply an antibacterial medication to target any remaining bacteria and support healing.
The process is thorough, and Dr. Swaintek-Lamb will take her time to ensure your mouth is as clean and healthy as possible.
Once the anesthetic wears off, you might notice some soreness in your gums. Your teeth could feel more sensitive to temperature for a day or two. These side effects are completely normal and usually resolve quickly.
You may also experience mild swelling or tenderness in the treated areas. Any discomfort can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Dr. Swaintek-Lamb may recommend using a special mouth rinse to reduce bacteria and promote healing.
During the next few days, it’s best to eat softer foods and avoid anything too hot or spicy. Continue brushing and flossing, but do so gently to avoid irritating your gums while they heal.
Good home care is key to keeping your gums healthy after scaling and root planing. Brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush, flossing daily, and visiting us regularly will help you maintain your results and prevent further gum issues.
Dr. Swaintek-Lamb may schedule a follow-up visit to check on your healing and determine whether additional treatment is needed. In some cases, ongoing periodontal maintenance cleanings may be recommended every few months instead of the usual twice-a-year cleanings.
A scaling and root planing treatment protects your oral health. Gum disease doesn’t go away on its own, and left untreated, it can lead to serious problems like bone loss and tooth loss.
